Ecological Designer

Princeton Hydro is seeking a mid-level Ecological Designer with expertise in the restoration and management of freshwater and estuarine ecosystems to join our Natural Resources team. The ideal candidate will have a significant understanding of ecology, engineering, and landscape design; a demonstrated ability to manage multi-disciplinary projects; and an aptitude for working in a fast-paced consulting environment. The position will be based in Princeton Hydro's Trenton-area office in Ringoes, NJ which houses the majority of our Natural Resources staff.

Founded in 1998 with the specific mission of providing integrated ecological and engineering consulting services, Princeton Hydro offers expertise in natural resource management, water resources engineering, geotechnical design & investigation, and regulatory compliance. The best fit for this position is an  ecologically-minded individual with experience working to design restoration and management solutions for multiple ecosystem types and in a variety of landscape contexts (including highly urbanized settings). We envision hiring a candidate that is eager to participate in design projects involving wetland, river, floodplain, and coastal/shoreline restoration as well as watershed based best management practices. The ideal candidate will  be a resourceful team player who enjoys collaboration across interdisciplinary teams with biologists, ecologists, fluvial geomorphologists, geologists, and engineers. The ideal candidate will also have experience managing projects and coordinating interdisciplinary project teams, often serving as the direct point-of-contact with the client, and having overall or progressive responsibility for all aspects of the project.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Ecology, Environmental Engineering, Landscape Architecture or similar.
  • 5 to 7 years of experience or a Master’s Degree plus 3 to 5 years of experience.
  • Experience designing restoration projects in two or more of the following ecosystems: wetland, riverine/stream,  floodplain, coastal/shoreline.
  • At least 3 years of experience in project management, including coordination of interdisciplinary project teams, budget tracking, and ensuring that projects are completed on time and to client expectations.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills; including the ability to write technical reports and convey technical information to clients.
  • Experience preparing proposals, conceptual plans, and cost estimates for future work.
  • Ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
  • Organized and detail oriented.
  • Excellent time management skills that allow for the simultaneous management of  multiple projects and tasks.
  • AutoCAD
  • Geographic Information Systems/ArcGIS software

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Field skills including wetland delineation and experience in total station and/or GPS surveying.
  • Basic understanding of federal and state regulations to guide design choices.
  • Hydrologic & Hydraulic computer models, including HydroCAD, HEC-HMS, and HEC-RAS.
  • Experience with designing climate change adaptation and resiliency projects.
